Fighting for Your Freedom in Lititz, PA
Founded by Moravian Church members in 1756, Lititz was named after a castle in Bohemia. For one hundred years, only Moravians were allowed to live in Lititz, and until the mid-19th century, only Moravian congregation members were permitted to own homes in Lititz (all others were required to lease their homes). Finally, five years prior to the start of the Civil War, this system was abolished. During the American Revolution, the Brethren’s House (built in 1759) was used as a hospital, and the oldest all-girls boarding school in the U.S. was located in Lititz. Lititz hosts the annual Queen of Candles Pageant, along with fireworks, and an extravagantly decorated park.
In 2006, Lititz hosted a year-long celebration that commemorated the 250th anniversary of the naming of the town. Lititz often makes the list of “delightfully-names towns,” which also include Bareville, Paradise, Bird-in-Hand, Mount Joy, Intercourse, and Blue Ball. Lititz was named the winner of the “Coolest Small Towns” competition in 2013. Unfortunately, Lititz became known for something much more negative in 2005, when David G. Ludwig shot and killed Michael and Cathryn Borden, fleeing the area with their daughter.
Ludwig was later found in Indiana, then extradited to Lancaster County, where he received two consecutive life sentences for first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, statutory sexual assault, and firearms violations. Police later seized 54 guns from the home of Gregory and Jane Ludwig. Some of the notable people from Lititz include Bob Longenecker, Hollywood talent agent, Richard A. Snyder, Pennsylvania State Senator, Louise Adeline Weitzel, poet, Joey Welz, musician, and Roy and Gene Clair, founders of Clair Brothers—an audio manufacturer and sound reinforcement company.
