Ciccarelli Law Offices | Downingtown
The borough of Downingtown was originally known as the village of Milltown because of the number of mills located there in the early 18th Century. One industrial complex of mills was developed by businessman Thomas Downing shortly after his son, John, opened a tavern known as the Downing Mill Inn in 1761. Milltown started to be known as Downing’s Town around the time of the American Revolution, and the name was formally changed to Downingtown following the War of 1812.
Numerous locations in Downingtown have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, including the Downingtown Log House, East Lancaster Avenue Historic District, and General Washington Inn in 1979, the Roger Hunt Mill in 1980, and County Bridge No. 124 in 1988. Downingtown was also the setting for the 1958 horror film, The Blob, and the Downingtown Diner on West Lancaster Avenue featured in that movie still stands today.
