Fighting for Your Freedom in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
The name Bryn Mawr is Welsh for “big hill.” Bryn Mawr was named after a Wales estate belonging to Rowland Ellis, a Quaker who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1686 to escape religious persecution. Bryn Mawr was first named “Humphreysville,” until the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Main Line made it to the area; it was then renamed by railroad agent William Wilson. Bryn Mawr is located in Montgomery County, west of Pennsylvania, bordering Delaware County. Located toward the center of what is known as the main Line, Bryn Mawr has approximately 4,000 residents. Bryn Mawr Hospital, the first hospital in the area, was built in 1893 by Dr. George Gerhard.
The land occupied by Bryn Mawr was originally part of the charter King Charles II gave to William Penn in 1681. Despite the fact that William Penn had legitimate title to the land, Penn believed the Lenape Indians were the true landowners, so he paid the Lenape for the land in 1683, gaining their respect, and establishing peaceful relationships. The expansion of the railroad was responsible for an increase in Bryn Mawr population, bringing travelers, homes, and two summer hotels to the Main Line. The White Hall Hotel was considered the most “fashionable” hotel for summer residents between 1870 and 1900. Unfortunately, the Pennsylvania Railroad relocated the tracks, and visitors to Bryn Mawr declined.
Notable people from Bryn Mawr include Samuel Conway, chemist and Anthrocon chairman, Fran Crippen, swimmer, A. J. Croce, musician, Kat Dennings, Julius Wesley Becton, Jr., retired U.S. Army General, Hilda Doolittle, imagist poet, novelist, and memoirist, Bernard Farrell, former chairman of 550/Sony Music Entertainment, Emmet French, golfer, Phil Gosselin, Major League baseball player, Katharine Hepburn, actress, Jayne Mansfield, actress, Jacqueline Mars, heiress to Mars, Inc., Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the U.S., and Agnes Nixon, creator of One Life to Live and All My Children.
