Marijuana Update in West Chester PA
The debate rages all, in college towns like West Chester PA in Chester County, throughout Philadelphia, and across Pennsylvania as to what extent marijuana or weed should be legalized or allowed to be used for medical or health reasons.
While marijuana remains illegal and prosecutors and legislators across the state and in Philadelphia suburbs continue to prosecute stops of marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia, new information from another front discusses the unintended consequences of increasing the availability of marijuana to the community. Have questions regarding the legality of marijuana, in need of legal advice following receipt of marijuana charges or seeking help for a family friend who is in legal charge and has an addiction issue, contact us by EMAIL or call at (610) 692-8700.
A recent study by JAMA Pediatrics suggests that the increased use of medical marijuana may lead to more young children getting sick from accidentally eating food made with the drug. The study suggests that the correlation between use of medical marijuana and accident use by children may be related to a lack of safety issues in place. In some cases, medical marijuana items can look like treats and candies (ie. gummy candies, cookies, brownies and cakes, etc.) The symptoms in the case study were mostly mild and the emphasis was on parents using legal medical marijuana to use care in keeping the narcotic laced products out of reach.
Eighteen states and Washington, D.C., allow medical marijuana, though it remains illegal under federal law. Colorado’s law dates to 2000 but the study notes that use there soared after the 2009 policy change on prosecution. Last year, Colorado and Washington state legalized adult possession of small amounts of nonmedical marijuana. Some states, including Colorado, allow medical marijuana use by sick kids, with parents’ supervision.
